Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre impact assessment

Summary

Aims

Perth Concert Hall is a new arts venue in Perth, managed by Horsecross. The object of the study was to evaluate the economic impact of the Concert Hall on Perth and the surrounding area, including social benefits to the population, and to assess the potential economic benefits of proposed developments to Perth Theatre.

Methods

Performance was measured against targets set for the Concert Hall for 2006-07. Surveys were undertaken with relevant agencies (Horsecross, Scottish Enterprise Tayside, Perth and Kinross Council, VisitScotland's Perth Office, VisitScotland's Business Tourism Unit and the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce) , visitors to the Concert Hall, organisations that have held events in the Concert Hall and hotels and restaurants in Perth. The community and outreach work carried out by the Horsecross Community Team was evaluated through a study of performance reports, interviews with staff and partners, and beneficiaries of the community based projects

Findings

The Concert Hall was found to be performing well against targets and agencies and visitors are very pleased with the venue. The Hall attracts around 105,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from outside the area. It attracts around 12,000 business delegates annually, which generates £1.4 million net additional GVA per year for the local area. Targets set for community and outreach activities have been exceeded and are generating positive social benefits for the people of Perth. The potential economic impact of the redevelopment of the theatre is estimated at £0.4 million net additional GVA per annum for the local area, and it is estimated that community work will gain significantly also.

Recommendations

The report did not make any recommendations, as this was not in the study's remit.
