Food Production Efficiency Programme: full evaluation
Summary
Aims
Scottish Enterprise Grampian launched a food production efficiency programme with six Grampian food and drink companies in 1998, the aim of which was to encourage companies to assess and amend their manufacturing processes for maximum efficiency, thereby increasing profitability. Networking between participating companies was also an aim. The object of the evaluation was to assess the long-term impact of the programme on participating companies.
Methods
An interim evaluation was undertaken immediately after project completion; the full evaluation built on these results, looking at long-term impacts. A representative from each company was interviewed in person.
Findings
Overall the programme addressed the market failure and achieved most of its objectives. Support levels were found to be good, enabling companies to implement and maintain the changes recommended. Comments from interviewees on the operation of the programme were mixed.
Recommendations
It was recommended that SE Grampian did not run the programme again, as it was then available nationally through the Scottish Food and Drink Cluster.
